What is WiDCC

Welcome visitor!

WiDCC is an evolution of my previous project known as Raspberry DCC. The Raspberry DCC project started from the idea to use the wonderful Raspberry Pi as central station for a railway model set controlled through the DCC protocol. To do that a simple expansion shield has been designed.

The DCC protocol is widely used and has gained the honor of being a well recognized “standard” on the market. It’s primary goal is to control locomotive and other elements with digital commands transferred through the rails.
Therefore a reduced amount of cabling is required ad through the rails the signal can easily reach every edge of your model railway installation.
This is a technology from 90s, nowadays everything is wireless! I do not have a model installation yet, so why do I have to spend all this effort to develop a clone of an old technology?

Why not to invest time in developing something different?

Here is the WiDCC goal: develop a DCC similar protocol that relies on a WiFi communication. While the normal DCC is a one way communication protocol (from central station to peripheral), the WiDCC can be two-ways allowing the central station to ask information from peripheral devices. If the communication channel is wireless, the model railway installation can be very easy from an electrical point of view: no need for expensive an complex boosters, just connect the power supply and you’re done!

Keep looking every now and then for updates!
